Package: microcode.ctl
Version: 1.12-2
Severity: normal
I know it seems like nonsense but I do want the installation of
microcode.ctl to download the microcode even though my CPU is a VIA C3!
It won't harm the VIA C3 since the program checks at run time if the CPU
is suitable. I run a Celeron 4 as a diskless client mounting the root
file system so it the microcode is present it will be used at boot time.
I know I can manually download it but I like the fact that you upload a
new version of the package whenever new microcode is released.

Hello.
After a recent discussion about microcode license, I
think that our method is correct. (We check if
CPU is Intel, and only after the check we download
the microcodes).
IANAL, but in your case, you can download the
microcode in your AMD machine, to install
microcode in your Intel CPU on your net,
without license problems.
But this is a "special case". In other normal cases
I think that the microcode could not be installed
on AMD machine, according to the Intel license.
It is safe not to change the automatic decision,
and thus to close this bug.
If you don't agree, please reopen the bug
so that we can discuss further.
ciao
