Package: pdns-server
Version: 4.0.3-1

In Jessie, I had these packages installed:

$ dpkg -l | egrep pdns
ii pdns-backend-mysql 3.4.1-4+deb8u7
amd64 generic MySQL backend for PowerDNS
ii pdns-recursor 3.6.2-2+deb8u3
amd64 PowerDNS recursor
ii pdns-server 3.4.1-4+deb8u7
amd64 extremely powerful and versatile nameserver

Upgrade from Jessie to Stretch also installed pdns-backend-bind, which
resulted in failed start of pdns_server:

pdns Fatal error: Trying to set unknown parameter 'bind-config'

I was able to get rid of the error by removing
/etc/powerdns/pdns.d/bind.conf.

I don't understand why pdns-backend-bind was installed, since it is not
required, but only recommended by pdns-server:

rec: pdns-backend-bind

How can I get the upgrade done without installation of
pdns-backend-bind?

I'm sure this is something your package manager can be configured to
do or not do, but this is not a problem in pdns-server.
