Thanks! The update has landed in unstable and testing a few days ago
already.
I would like to bring to your attention that open-vm-tools needs to be
fixed to work with Wayland. The GNOME version in Debian Testing and
Debian unstable now uses wayland by default and open-vm-tools is currently
unable to manage the resolution under wayland.

been contributed apparently:

It would be nice if we could have an upstream-blessed patch for this.
