I still think setting the GUI dependencies as recommends is the right choice as
per the explanation Adrian gave, so I'm not going to change this.

I recommend that you don't skip installing recommended packages if you want the
full functionality of any Debian package. If you're using a derivative distro
that disables the installation of recommended packages, then please take the
issue up with the developers of the distro you're using.
