Package: ntpdate
Version: 1:4.2.6+dfsg-1
Severity: wishlist

Compare the output of "ntpdate" and "openntpd -d", both used against the same
server

t@h ~> sudo ntpdate -v ntp
28 Mar 14:45:41 ntpdate[3636]: ntpdate [email protected] Mon Feb 8 19:06:27 UTC
2010 (1)
28 Mar 14:45:41 ntpdate[3636]: no server suitable for synchronization found
t@h ~> sudo openntpd -d
ntp engine ready
reply from 83.221.148.2: not synced, next query 640s

ntpdate just says "no servers", while openntpd actually says why the
server could not be used. It would obviously be nice if ntpdate output
was as useful as openntpd output.

Regards, Thue

Hi,

you have fallen victim of the non-standard arguments used by ntpdate

-v Be verbose. This option will cause ntpdate's version
identifica-
             tion string to be logged.

To get more information you actually want debug (-d).

Also note that ntpdate is deprecated, please use sntp.

Bernhard
