When I set my git user.name to a string containing Japanese characters
and make some commits, gource only shows boxes where the Japanese
characters should be. I imagine the same will occur for all other
Unicode characters not yet present in ttf-unifont. I imagine the same
will occur for filenames with Unicode characters not yet present in
ttf-unifont. The problem is that FTGL does not yet support using
fontconfig to fall back to other fonts for characters not in the default
font.
You could ask upstream to add a QuesoGLC (libglc-dev in Debian) font
rendering backend so that the font renderer will fall back on other
available fonts for characters not in the default font. An example of
such a backend can be found in Chromium B.S.U. Please note that Chromium
is not GPL licensed so you cannot just lift the code from Chromium. More

Another option might be to use Pango and Cairo with an OpenGL backend,
