Booted off an external USB drive, with root and swap living in an LVM
on encrypted partition. (This is the configuration you get if you use
d-i with an external USB drive and ask for everything encrypted.)
When I "hibernate" there are all kinds of scary messages about I/O to
a dead device and /dev/sdb seems to appear when before the USB disk
was /dev/sda and there was no /dev/sdb and everything goes into a
scary state of not working but still responding and I/O errors fly up
the screen.
I've done zero configuration of the hibernation scripts, they're the
default. X is not running. There are no nasty devices. Computer
hibernates fine to its internal IDE drive.

I'll grant that this is a difficult situation. On the other hand, how
cool would it be to hibernate to an encrypted external drive, plug it
into a random laptop, reboot, and *voila* have your session (in a VNC)
pop back to life? Crank up an X, attach to the local VNC server, and
hoo-wah!
