Today I tried to upgrade from emacs20 to emacs21. My installation is
Debian unstable with
ii emacs20 20.7-13.1 The GNU Emacs editor.

Bug Fix: I installed ecb with "apt-get install ecb", then
emacs21 and everything seems to be ok now.

It was, and has been filed separately against ecb, and fixed long ago
