I have been using the Gnus "nnml" back end to save my email.
It creates one file per message, and these are not mbox files as
they do not begin with a From_ line; rather, they are straight
RFC 822 with some extra header fields such as X-From-Line,
X-Gnus-Mail-Source, and Xref. A sample file is attached.
Now, I had found one of these email files with grep, and wanted
to quickly view an attachment of it without first having to
locate the message in Gnus. So, I tried opening it with "see":
% see Mail/pre/mail/test/63

Error: no "view" mailcap rules found for type "application/octet-stream"
That didn't work out, but see(1) told me how to specify the MIME
type:
% see message/rfc822:Mail/pre/mail/test/63
Mail/pre/mail/test/63 is not a mailbox.
Still no luck.
If I copy the file aside and change the X-From-Line header field
of the copy to From_, then Mutt is happy to display the message.
However, that line should not be required in message/rfc822; from
what I can tell, RFC 822 and RFC 2822 do not even allow such a
line, and the definition of message/rfc822 in RFC 2046 section
5.2.1 says nothing about it.
Thus, if Mutt registers itself as a mailcap handler for
message/rfc822, it should be able to open and display a
non-mailbox file. This might involve a new option; or
if Mutt already supports such an option, then the mailcap
registration should be changed to use it.
