The current Steam beta is built using an updated version of SDL which
triggers a locking bug in older versions of libXi. If using a system copy
of libXi, there's no problem, but if falling back to the Steam Runtime's
copy of libXi, the bug occurs. The symptom is that putting Steam into Big
Picture mode, with "steam -bigpicture" or through the GUI, causes its UI
thread to hang.
Installing libxi6:i386 works around this.
This currently only affects the beta, but it seems reasonably likely that
it will affect non-beta versions during the Debian 11 release cycle, so
I think we should consider adding
Depends: libxi6 (>= 2:1.7.4)
to the steam:i386 package, and maybe getting that change unblocked for
bullseye too.
