Package: iwd
Severity: wishlist

Apparently ell (ITP #895584) is now available in the archive:
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/ell

At some point iwd should switch from using its bundled ell to building
with against the packaged version.

I asked upstream who said that ell will not provide any ABI guarantees
until 1.0, thus it seems less than perfect for iwd to use it at this
point (atleast without a extremely strict build- and runtime-dependency).

There is currently no support in iwd to even build against a system ell
instead of the bundled version. The build system magic should be
implemented to make this a configure switch (unless it's at some point
determined shipping the bundled version isn't needed at all and the
build system could just be changed to only support building against a
system version of ell ofcourse).

(It also seems ell releases atleast currently are driven to be made
for the sole benefit of being used in iwd, and since packaging of
new ell releases are lagging behind a bit that means using them
would have a negative impact of being able to provide newer iwd
versions in Debian.)

Filing this mostly for the record and as a reminder at this point,
so it can be reconsidered at some future point. (Hopefully we'll see
ell 1.0 at some point, but I have no idea how far away that is.)

Regards,
Andreas Henriksson
