Package: xscreensaver
Version: 3.34-3
Severity: normal
note: i'm not 100% certain if xscreensaver alone is responsible for
the problem.
situation: using libpam-ldap for authentication of users, with an ldap server
that enforces authenticated bind request. this means that every client box
needs to have an /etc/pam_ldap.conf file with a bind password in it.
problem:
if that /etc/pam_ldap.conf file is not readable by everyone, then
xscreensaver doesn't authenticate successfully at all.
the auth log "xscreensaver[13128]: pam_ldap: missing file "/etc/pam_ldap.conf"
indicates a permission problem.
xscreensaver is setgid shadow, which i assume is to work around
password authentication problems (but i'm not sure if this affects how it
calls pam functions).
anyway, making /etc/pam_ldap.conf owned by group shadow and
mode 0640 doesn't fix authentication: apparently xscreensaver relinquishes
its privileges too early for that to work.
making that config file readably by anyone "fixes" the authentication problem,
but is very unsatisfactory from a security point of view.
can xscreensaver setup its pam environment before giving up the privileges,
so that its gid shadow comes into effect?
(if not, then the bug should go to libpam-ldap as then that module should
provide a way of verifying a password without telling everybody about the
ldap identity/bindpwd of the client box.)
regards
az
