Since a few month I have the problem, that KDM does not start in two from three
cases.
I use the NVidia binary driver and I see a short time the NVidia-Symbol and
then the console login appears.
I log in as root and call:
/etc/init.d/kdm restart && exit
and then kdm starts correct and I can log in.

kdm was last released with Debian 8 (jessie) in April 2015
and was removed from the Debian archive afterwards.
It has been superseded by sddm.
