Steps to reproduce the bug.
1. Configure OS to use KDM.
2. Log in with KDM as non-privileged user (not root).
3. Open some terminal emulator.
4. Type "xclock" and press Enter.
Result: xclock started.
5. Close xclock window.
6. Switch to root with "su" command.
7. Type "xclock" and press Enter.
Resulting message:
"No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: :0.0"
I think that it is a bug.
8. Switch to GDM.
9. Retry 2—7 with GDM. All should works without problems.

kdm was last released with Debian 8 (jessie) in April 2015
and was removed from the Debian archive afterwards.
It has been superseded by sddm.
