For the last several testing versions,
if /etc/login.defs contains "MD5_CRYPT_ENAB yes",
this will cause errors from addgrp, adduser, passwd, su, and the like.

In the past, debian archive lists said this was supposed to be OK and enabled.
I've not been able to find documentation of this being compiled out of the
default build.

I recommend one of:
Move this to the obsoleted section
Update comments to indicate it's not available in default Debian build
   Reinclide this in the build
Some other option I didn't think of.

If I'm missing something, please let me know. I haven't fully ruled out error
on my part.

Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,
Josh Davis

Version: 4.0.17-1

In 4.0.17-1 we re-added support for MD5_CRYPT_ENAB in getdef.c so that
users are not warned about it.

This utility is indeed onyl used by non PAM-enabled utilities. This is
why the change has been merged in the 504_undef_USE_PAM.dpatch patch,
which disables PAM for some utilities in Debian.
