Package: gnome-panel
Vesion: 2.8.2-1
The clock-applet triggers writes to the root partition
about every 3 seconds. This prevents disk spin-down
when idling. This can be veryfied by for example
#sar -D 1 1000
The problem goes away by removing the clock applet.
I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, kernel 2.6.10
and libc6 2.3.2.ds1-20
