--- Begin Message ---Package: tetex-base Version: 3.0-19 Severity: normal Due to some problems on my machine I had to install tetex-bin manually with dpkg -i tetex-bin_... . During the configure step I got the error that some of the formats can't be built. In the refered file in /tmp I found the following lines: fmtutil: running `pdfetex -ini -jobname=amstex -progname=amstex -translate-file=cp227.tcx *amstex.ini' ... This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4) (INITEX) (/usr/share/texmf-tetex/web2c/cp227.tcx) entering extended mode (/usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/amstex/config/amstex.ini (/usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/generic/config/pdftexconfig.tex) (/usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/plain/base/plain.tex Preloading the plain format: codes, registers, parameters, fonts, more fonts, macros, math definitions, output routines, hyphenation (/usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex)) (/usr/bin/amstex ! Emergency stop. l.1 ^^? [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@<C0><A8>^^D^... No pages of output. Transcript written on amstex.log. The reason for this is that I started the dpkg job in /usr/bin , so that the amstex binary was included instead of the amstex-TeX-file. Please make sure that pdfetex is started in a proper directory (e.g. the direcorty of all the templates) despite of the directory dpkg is started. Using apt-get -f install to configure tetex-base on the other hand works normally. I read the following instructionscaregfully, but I'm sorry, I don't add other files, because none files will help you ;-) -- Package-specific info: If you report an error when running one of the TeX-related binaries (latex, pdftex, metafont,...), or if the bug is related to bad or wrong output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the error in your report. Don't forget to also include minimal examples of other files that are needed, e.g. bibtex databases. Often it also helps to include the logfile. Please, never send included pictures! If your example file isn't short or produces more than one page of output (except when multiple pages are needed to show the problem), you can probably minimize it further. Instructions on how to do that can be found at http://www.latex-einfuehrung.de/mini-en.html (english) or http://www.latex-einfuehrung.de/mini.html (german) ################################## minimal input file ################################## other files ###################################### List of ls-R files -rw-rw-r-- 1 root kmem 1081 Jul 10 10:01 /var/lib/texmf/ls-R lrwxrwxrwx 1 root staff 25 Oct 19 2005 /usr/local/share/texmf/ls-R -> /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-LOCAL lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Jun 27 10:59 /usr/share/texmf/ls-R -> /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFMAIN lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Jul 10 09:57 /usr/share/texmf-tetex/ls-R -> /var/lib/texmf/ls-R-TEXMFDIST-TETEX -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17.1 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages tetex-base depends on: ii tex-common 0.25 Common infrastructure for using an ii ucf 2.0012 Update Configuration File: preserv Versions of packages tetex-base recommends: pn tetex-doc <none> (no description available) Versions of packages tetex-bin depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.2 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.16.2 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii dialog 1.0-20060221-1 Displays user-friendly dialog boxe ii dpkg 1.13.22 package maintenance system for Deb ii ed 0.2-20 The classic unix line editor ii libc6 2.3.6-15 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfontconfig1 2.3.2-7 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.2.1-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.1.1-7 GCC support library ii libice6 1:1.0.0-3 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libjpeg62 6b-13 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkpathsea4 3.0-17 path search library for teTeX (run ii libpaper1 1.1.19 Library for handling paper charact ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-5.1 PNG library - runtime ii libpoppler0c2 0.4.5-4.1 PDF rendering library ii libsm6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 Session Management library ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-7 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libt1-5 5.1.0-2 Type 1 font rasterizer library - r ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-7 X11 client-side library ii libxaw7 1:1.0.1-5 X11 Athena Widget library ii libxext6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxmu6 1:1.0.1-3 X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxpm4 1:3.5.4.2-3 X11 pixmap library ii libxt6 1:1.0.0-5 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii mime-support 3.36-1 MIME files 'mime.types' & 'mailcap ii perl 5.8.8-6 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii sed 4.1.5-1 The GNU sed stream editor ii ucf 2.0012 Update Configuration File: preserv ii whiptail 0.52.2-5 Displays user-friendly dialog boxe ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-13 compression library - runtime Versions of packages tetex-extra depends on: ii tetex-bin 3.0-17 The teTeX binary files ii ucf 2.0012 Update Configuration File: preserv -- debconf information: tetex-base/olddat: true tetex-base/fmtutil-failed: * tetex-bin/cnf_name: * tetex-bin/texmf: true tetex-base/oldcfg: true tetex-base/oldupdm: tetex-base/updmap-failed:

Yes, it's actually not needed! It was probably there because the upstream README says that the texmf tarball must be unpacked first; but this is because upstream creates the formats with "make install". Funny that nobody ever noticed this for years... [frank] * Refresh common.functions.in from tex-common. create_tetex_formats() now runs fmtutil-sys in a temporary directory (closes: #377997).
