Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.2.2.1-2
Severity: wishlist

gnome-shell only provides two search engine providers currently:

$ ls /usr/share/gnome-shell/search_providers/
google.xml wikipedia.xml

Since there's not a configuration file for this (and therefore the admin
can't easily add more or disable these) it would be nice to at least
provide more alternatives, rather than pushing everyone to Google for
web searches.

(As a concrete example, DuckDuckGo is relatively popular in the Debian
community.)

GNOME Shell no longer provides default search providers for Google and
Wikipedia. I guess someone could add a package for that but it's not
going to be in gnome-shell directly.

Alternatively, if you have the Epiphany web browser (GNOME Web)
installed, there is an Epiphany search provider which provides a
shortcut for searching the web with that browser or direct access to
Epiphany bookmarks. Other browsers are welcome to implement that if
they want. You can change Epiphany's default search engine in Epiphany
itself.

Finally, you can turn off search providers or change their display
order in the GNOME Settings app. Just click Search in the sidebar.

I'm closing this bug since there is nothing to be done here in the
gnome-shell packaging.

Thank you,
Jeremy BĂcha
