Package: prospect
Version: 0.9.8-1
Severity: important
I'm not able to get prospect to run with the 2.6 kernel. It dies with
the error:
Time: /bin/ls
Can't open /proc/ksyms
- errno = 2 -- No such file or directory
0.406 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:linux_model.c Couldn't find "num_physpages" in
/proc/ksyms.
Warning: couldn't import System.map file - kernel profiles disabled.
prospect: couldn't find "/lib/modules/2.6.0/oprofile/oprofile.o"
NOTE: Prospect depends on a functional oprofile installation. You can get
oprofile from http://oprofile.sf.net. However, make sure to read the
prospect README.INSTALL file since you may already have an oprofile
distribution that was delivered with prospect, but not installed.
Check the /usr/share/doc/prospect[-0.9.8] directory.

This package has been removed from the Debian GNU/Linux unstable
release at my request.
All upstream development for prospect has been at a halt for over a
year. Further, as this bug demonstrated, prospect will only run on
2.4 or earlier kernels, using versions of the oprofile package that
only work on 2.4 kernels. There was some hope that someone would be
willing to bring this code forward to Linux 2.6 but after two and a
half years, that appears highly unlikely.
Since prospect functionality can be found in oprofile and other
similar tools, and since prospect cannot support the 2.6 kernels
that are now the default, it made sense to simply remove it from
Debian and let it slip away peacefully.
