Looking at #682481 shows this:

While I agree, that at the time, epiphany's security features were
lacking at best, a lot has changed since then. I could list the most
important changes, but fortunately Michael Catanzaro has already done
that:

http://blogs.gnome.org/mcatanzaro/2014/10/18/gnome-web-3-14/

Checking (for example) https://blog.fefe.de/ shows, that this does
indeed work; epiphany even tells me what the problem is when I click on
the broken lock symbol (Unknown CA, CA Cert Signing Authority).

I know that it's quite late in the release cycle, but I'd still
appreciate it, if you would consider switching back to epiphany for
jessie. I've personally done so a few months ago and I am more than
happy with the decision.

Best regards

Alexander Kurtz

I'm closing this bug. Practically, firefox-esr better meets our user's
needs than epiphany does. This is in line with what other popular
Linux distros are doing (except they usually ship Firefox instead of
Firefox ESR).

Chromium is sometimes used a default browser for Linux distros but I
believe we are happier with Firefox ESR currently.

gnome-core's browser dependency was demoted to Recommends for Debian
12 to allow users to more easily remove the default browser in case
they would prefer to use a Flatpak or Snap packaged alternative (or
really anything at all). Epiphany is listed as an alternative browser
in the Recommends line.

So this doesn't mean that you can't use Epiphany if you want. For many
websites and use cases, it is probably fine. webkit2gtk does get
security support in Debian now. However, there are some browser
features like extensions, WebRTC, and nearly 100% website
compatibility that Firefox and Chromium offer but Epiphany does not.
Epiphany will likely always lag behind in features.

Thank you,
Jeremy BĂcha
