When I was in Lars Wirzenius's class, he said that CFLAGS should be
set such that the package builds with debug information and that
LDFLAGS should not trigger stripping, the package already strips
later.

Also using . between user and group is hazardous when someone decides
to name a user root.root, whereas : is the preferred and illegal
character for usernames.

The attached diff should work...
