courier's system is designed to use /usr/lib/courier/bin/sendmail
as the sendmail, including but not limited to couriermlm, maildrop, and
other components. Since many parts of the system expect sendmail to be
in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin, symlinks should be placed there pointing to
the "real" location of sendmail. This bug also has bearing on a similar
bug filed against courier-maildrop, and may obsolete it.
I am available for courier packaging help.
Additionally, this likely obsoletes the (incorrect) patches made to the
courier package that change the path of sendmail.

Jonathan,
I have recently taken over maintenance of the courier package. I apologize
that nobody responded to your bug report from 2003!
It appears that sometime between now and then this bug was fixed, based on the
current contents of courier-mta:
https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/courier-mta/filelist
As such, I am closing this bug report. However, feel free to reopen it if you
are still experiencing problems.
Also, I noticed that you offered to assist with packaging courier. I would
love to have a co-maintainer if you are still interested.
