I just discovered the "terminal" command in grub and its feature where it can run the grub interface on either the serial console or the VGA console, depending on where a key is hit first. What I think would be a really cool extension to that would be to somehow get grub to pass that info along to the Linux kernel via the console= parameter. So if the user boots the system from the serial console, grub will pass console=ttyS0 to the kernel, but if they boot from the vga console, it'll pass console=vga.
