Introduction
Please forgive me for this long writeup. I suggest that you grab a cup of
coffee and get comfortable. A lot happened today and I want to convey all of it
to you while it is still fresh in my mind. I am hoping to answer some of your
questions here so that you have no need to ask me later. In short, Iceweasel
locked up and got corrupted. Here goes:
Problem
It all began when I noticed that my weather extension for Gnome Shell was not
working. It was then that I determined I had lost the Internet. I tried to use
Iceweasel to log into my wireless access point but I was unable to get any
network connection. When I tried to exit Iceweasel the window closed only to
reveal a duplicate. I say duplicate because it had the same tabs open. When I
tried to close that window I got no response. I ended up using the Processes
tab of the System Monitor app to terminate the process. I then rebooted. My
network connection was down so I tried using the Network control panel to
connect with no success. I power cycled my access point and by the time I got
back to my desktop it had already connected.
The first thing I tried was to use Iceweasel to visit the Gnome Shell
Extensions page where I could delete the weather extension and reinstall it. I
was able to delete it but I was unable to install it again. Normally when I
install an extension I get a popup window with two choices - Cancel or Install.
In this case I did not get the popup window, and the extension did not install.
I tried looking in /var/log for a log file but found none. I then searched
through my ~/.mozilla directory tree for a log file. Again I was unsuccessful.
Action Taken
I tried adding a guest account and logging into that account. When I launched
Iceweasel it came cleanly. After completing an initial setup I once again
navigated to the Gnome Shell extensions website. This time I was able to add
and remove extensions. After logging back into my own user account I archived
my ~/.mozilla directory tree before deleting it. When I launched Iceweasel it
came up cleanly. I had to completely reconfigure Iceweasel as a new install,
but I am now running again with no known issues.
Conclusion
I do not know if there was any cause and effect relationship between the issues
I had with Iceweasel and my wireless access point going down. If you are
interested in doing a post-mortem of my ~/.mozilla directory tree I can provide
you with a copy of the archive I created. If I can be of any assistance please
do not hesitate to contact me. I am at your disposal.

Version: 115.12.0esr-1+rm
src:iceweasel has been superseded by src:firefox-esr in version
45.0esr-1 in March 2016. Transitional packages to ease upgrades were
provided in the wheezy, jessie, stretch and buster releases. The
transitional packages have been removed finally before the bullseye
release in August 2021.
After regular security support for buster ended in August 2022 and LTS
support ended in June 2024, I'm closing the remaining bug reports now.
Andreas
