since upgrading Bookworm→Trixie, i.e., mdadm 4.2→4.4, where configuration
files use non-absolute ARRAY device names (a supported and documented
consistency
feature

commands like *mdadm --monitor --scan* fail with *mdadm: error opening
devname: No such file or directory* unless run from the /dev/md directory.
Unless one monitors log messages enough, it's possible to miss the
failing --monitor
--scan jobs and lack --monitor alerts until data loss occurs.
