Package: sawfish
Version: 1:1.5.3-2.1+b1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
After the upgrade to Gnome 3, I have tried to start sawfish as the default
window manager in several ways, which almost all fail and give the Gnome
fullscreen message "something has gone wrong, please logout". I can however
kill the default WM when logged into a Gnome session and then start sawfish,
this works fine, it shows no errors on the command line.
I tried the following things to make sawfish the default WM:
1. add the line: export WINDOW_MANAGER=sawfish
to the .profile line, since the /usr/bin/gnome-wm script looks for this
environment variable to start the preferred WM.
Sawfish is started but the Gnome session stalls and the Gnome error screen
appears.
2. I make files /usr/share/xsession/gnome-fallback-sawfish.desktop,
/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-fallback-sawfish.session and
/usr/bin/gnome-session-fallback-sawfish, the latter one refering to the
.session file (see /usr/bin/gnome-session-fallback) changing in the .session
file the WM from gnome-wm to sawfish
Sawfish is started but the Gnome session stalls and the Gnome error screen
appears.
3. I changed the order of known WM's in the /usr/bin/gnome-wm script to sawfish
first.
Sawfish is started but the Gnome session stalls and the Gnome error screen
appears.
I would expect that any of the three things above would properly start a Gnome
session with sawfish, however, this unfortunately seems in vain. Next to this
bug, I would like to know if I do something entirely wrong and there might be
another way to start sawfish as a default WM.
Yours,
Tjeerd Pinkert
