I have run into a problem playing h.264 encoded video on AMD-64. The general
problem is described in the following forum posting on the VLC forums:

In summary: The amd64 Linux version of vlc is incapable of properly decoding
h.264 encoded files in both the mp4 and mkv containers. Examples of output
have been uploaded to my web space. The good output screenshot was taken
with the Mac OS X version of VLC. The bad output screenshot was taken with
the Debian unstable version of VLC.

This bug was fixed when an updated ffmpeg entered unstable. Namely, I
have version 0.cvs20060823-2 of libavcodec0d, libavformat0d, and
libpostproc0d and this problem is gone.
