When closing azureus through the menu, it terminates normally.
However when I click on the cross that is part of the window decoration, only
the GUI terminates, the process still exists.
`ps aux` reveals (truncated to the relevant parts):

As the saying goes, that is a feature, not a bug. Azureus display an
icon on the `System Tray' task bar, on most desktop environments --
freedesktop.org compatible ones, in any case. To kill the process,
either kill it at the console, as you did, or right click on the
System Try icon -- displayed as a blue frog -- and select `Exit'.
