The manpage says that the program > doesn't take any options, it indeed doesn't. However, if you specify > something (e.g. '--help') it should be pretty clear what happens > (hence the "by example"). Thanks for the speedy reply and simple explanation, which seems, unfortunately, not wholly satisfactory... Suggested fixes, either: 1) reword the man page to more accurately describe 'i', without distracting users with missing options, e.g. 'i' has no options, but invoking it with any arbitrary text string, such as "23skiddoo", "foobar", etc., would demonstrate how the program functions. 2) Make 'i' parse '-h' and '--help' to show some model usages and outputs. Notes: some experts may find it obvious what "by example" was intended to mean, but at least one less knowledgeable user (me) finds the man page simultaneously vague and overprecise. I say "vague" because "by example" customarily means a text display of an actual example, not a run of the program's main algorithm, what amounts to a demo by negative example. "Overprecise" because "one of..." implies that only those two options will provide such a demo, when almost any text string would do. Also, I had interpreted "doesn't take any options" as meaning "has no options other than '-h' or '--help'". HTH...
