I'm a package backporter and imho I think there is no need
to change autoconf/automake/aclocal stuff from the package.
I've made a different solution (diff included)
The patch is very small and it is compatible with uscan.

Hi,
I'm closing this because we now have a new package that implements most
of the proposed changes. Thanks to Gianluigi for the work, some of it
has been reused in a modified form and other parts can perhaps still be
put to use.
Cheers,
