This should not be required - the method ypinit uses ought to be able to
figure out the right address anyway. Other people have run into the
same thing, my best guess being that there's something up with the
resolver configuration but I've never had enough information to track it
down.
What's the output of:
host <master hostname>
host <master ip>
cat /etc/nsswitch.conf
on the master server?
