Hmm. The may or may not be unrelated, but I've also noticed since the 2.8 upgrade that the splash screen stays up for A LONG TIME (minutes) after the desktop has apparently finished loading. I always have to click it away. This could be causing some of the complaints as well, as it's still there when it's no longer imparting useful information about the login process.
