I did some more digging, compiling the "apt-get source"-gotten source
by hand with "./configure --prefix=/usr" and make; running from the
build areas resulted in a working libvirtd (even creating and booting
a VM).

Next I tried building a complete .deb via:

apt-get build-dep libvirt-bin
apt-get --compile source libvirt-bin

I then removed my libvirt-bin packages (and -dev) and installed the
ones built from source -- and that libvirt works! Next, I tried simply
re-installing the "real" packages again. And that also works. Sorry
for the noise, but unfortunately, I do not know *why* that worked.
