This sounds like a mismatched toolchain problem. I had this same problem
when I had a kernel installed that was compiled with an older version of
gcc, and then installed util-vserver_0.30.208-2 which had been compiled
with the newer gcc4.0.

What kernel revision are you running and what vserver patch? What gcc
did you use to compile your kernel? It looks like when you recompiled
util-vserver with the gcc you have installed it started to work, this
says to me that there is something out of date there.
