This is precisely the reason why I want access to an unstable alpha chroot! According to octave's build log, the mieee option is added to XTRA_CFLAGS and XTRA_CXXFLAGS, but we need to know whether it ends up in CPPFLAGS. And asking people, wait for their answer and then ask other questions simply isn't productive.
