I just happened to find this hack, which seems to accomplish
(most of) the desired functionality:

  xdaliclock -transparent -xrm "*overrideRedirect: True" &

This can be used in conjunction with '-geometry' to put the clock
anywhere on the desktop, etc.

The only downside is that the clock ends up "always-on-top", and
can't be covered by other windows, like a well-behaved part of the
background.

Anyone know how to force an X window to be "always on BOTTOM" ?
