I've seen something like this with X2goclient. The problem was that in
sshd_config "PasswordAuthentication" was set to "no". In this case you
can work with passwords in the normal ssh client, but not when using
libssh (x2goclient uses libssh). Not sure this brings what you want, but
please check your sshd_config on the server.

( Maybe good to know that "no" is the default in Ubuntu. In Debian the
default is "yes". )
