Package: wicd
Version: 1.7.2.3-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I used wicd to connect to a wireless network that wicd showed as having
the ESSID "réseau sans fil". The connection failed with an authentification
error.

While wicd was running "iwlist scanning" gave:

Cell 07 - Address: 00:0C:F6:xx:xx:xx
            Channel:11
            Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
            Quality=55/70  Signal level=-55 dBm
            Encryption key:on
            ESSID:"r\xE9seau sans fil"
            Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s
                      18 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
            Bit Rates:6 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s
            Mode:Master
            Extra: Last beacon: 2524ms ago
            IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1
                Group Cipher : CCMP
                Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP
                Authentication Suites (1) : PSK

Note that the ESSID contains an e-acute encoded in iso_8859-1 (latin1).
Wicd fails to connect.

I ran iwconfig while wicd was trying to connect and saw

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"r\xC3\xA9seau sans fil"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

Note that the ESSID contains an e-acute encoded in utf-8. wicd has read
an accented character in iso 8859-1 and has transformed it into utf8. This
is, of course, wrong. wicd should use the ESSID as reported by iwlist.

When I took the configuration file in /var/lib/wicd/configurations and
corrected it to use the correct ssid, wpa_supplicant connected without
problem.

My Nokia N900 was able to connect to the same network without problem. It
showed the network name as "r?seau sans fil".

thanks
Stuart Pook
