Hi,At first the lock file was still there, from before the upgrade. It was owned by postgres and had correct permissions, as far I could understand.
I didn't check permissions on /var and /var/run, but they were not changed before the purge/reinstall that served as workaround.
I checked the /etc/passwd and /etc/group, and it seemed ok. I also tried to downgrade to the previous version but the problem remained.If nobody else complains about this I propose to downgrade the bug severity to "strange unexplained event" and forget about it. :-)
