Is grub using an initramfs/initrd?

You should have something like
  /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-2-686-pae
when you take a look (edit on the boot menu), or look in
/boot/grub/grub.cfg.

Also, what's the output of "cat /proc/mounts" after boot?
