I should have mentioned that you should quit all your applications before doing that. So, please try this:
1) Quit all your applications so that you have zero windows and only a single workspace in i3. 2) Open a terminal, run "killall i3bar; xlsclients -l", save the output for later (and provide it in your mail given that this still does lockup your machine), then close the terminal again. 3) By now you should see nothing on your screen, just your background image. 4) Exit i3 using Mod-Shift-e.
