Not going to do this: exim might emit error messages here which might
get lost in the background. And configuration errors causing delays
will be detected easier this way.

If there is a _real_ network problem, other processes will hang as
well, so backgrounding exim doesn't gain enough to justify the loss in
transparency, IMO.
