Thanks, stopping the KDED Media Manager fixed it, and as I rarely use removable media anyway, this is fine for me. I don't have fam or gamin installed (just libfam0). And, my kernel is a debian 2.6.9. If I upgrade my kernel again someday, I'll try turning the Media Manager back on and see if it still polls the disk. Josh
