I'm tagging this as wontfix to document the current state as I understand it, but that doesn't mean that the bug is in fact not going to be fixed. I imagine the dpkg maintainers wouldn't mind a good proposal with a strong enough rationale to ensure there would not be a backlash leading to the default being flipped again (and again, and...) when another fraction of the audience wakes up and makes their needs known.
