This: define(ACROREAD, [repeat swallow(acroread) fill needs_xembed : acroread -openInNewWindow /a "$fragment" "$file"])
works for me in mozpluggerrc. There's no doubt that the default config without needs_xembed is broken. If it didn't work for the OP, perhaps he needed to killall chromium and restart the browser?
