thanks for your support and the archives you sent in. Unfortunatelly, I see no trace of a misbehaviour in the the fetcher code which I originally expected. Now it looks more like issue with the hot cache of download objects, especially because only a restart seems to fix it. I will make a bigger code review as soon as possible but cannot provide any hard ETA at the moment (personal reasons). Btw, Daniel: the size of the Release files does not mean much. It's always generated following the same format (same checksum and date string length, same paths) and has the same size until the archive config is changed.
