Looking again at Atlas build-system (in CONFIG/src/atlcomp.txt), it is clear that POWER3 is the less specific. In particular it gets no CPU-specific GCC flags, contrary to G4 (which gets -maltivec -mabi=altivec -mcpu=7400 -mtune=7400). So I am going to enforce POWER3.
