Yes, after asking here and there, I become aware the whole thing is due to missing DDC EDID support in vgabios (but it does not prevent windows from working correctly, so something apparently is missing on the linux side too). The problem is that i'm not sure anymore this is the right route. These changes are too late for wheezy.
