This supports the theory of poor compatibility of drive and media.

Blank CD-RW and CD-R are handled identically by burn software.
They make no difference to the ISO-9660 software either.

This weakens said theory.

There might be a difference in CD write mode between xorriso and Brasero.
SAO versus TAO. Sometimes the one still works whereas the other is already
failing.
What xorriso commands did you use exactly ?
