Hmmm... maybe some code around SCIM is broken. Can you make log with undocumented -d debug trace option? $ LANG=en_US.UTF-8 im-config -d Also, scim is in bad shape since its family of packages are not updated timely. With recent bump of scim (C++ program), it may cause some trouble with you IM method. What SCIM packages are installed? Are they active packages in sid/testing? (Many have been removed.)
